Google Adsense: An Alternative to Product Sales

Google’s AdSense is a quick and easy way to generate revenue from a content-rich website.

It all starts with Google Adwords, in which advertisers pay Google and Yahoo to have their ads appear next to search results.

For example, as you can see in the graphic below, I searched Google for the term ‘cosmetics’. In addition to the regular listings in the main body of the page, a number of ads for cosmetics appeared in the Sponsored Links section on the right side of the search results page.

Google’s AdSense program provides those advertisers with additional reach, by putting their ads onto additional Web sites.

That’s where you, as an affiliate, can benefit. Google will pay you a commission for running the ads on your site. Anytime someone clicks on one of those ads on your web pages, you’ll earn a piece of the Google pie.

Notice how the name of the page, affiliatemarketing.html, and the content are both related to ‘affiliate marketing’. Notice too how the ads are all related to affiliate marketing.

Therein lies the art behind making Adsense work for you.

The object is to write page content focused on a specific theme, targeting one or two keywords or keyword phrases. Adsense then ‘rewards’ you with ads related to the content of that page. Because your visitors are already interested in that topic, they’re more likely to click on the ad… and bingo! you earn a commission for the click.

How much commission? Well, Google’s not telling. However, their reasons may have something to do with the legal contracts between Google and its premium distribution partners.

However, estimates put the rates between 40 and 60% of Adwords rates and Adsense earnings.

Although Google’s Adsense terms of agreement prohibits Adsense publishers from reporting their earnings, tales of riches abound.

Chris Pirillo, best-selling author and creator of the Lockergnome series of online publications, reports clearing more than $10,000 a month. Jason Calacanis says his sites made $45,000 within the first four months. In February 2005, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) announced that Internet advertising totaled nearly $2.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004, the highest revenue quarter reported by the IAB. Estimates for the full-year 2004 totaled just under $9.6 billion – a 32% increase over full-year 2003.
